The Bolt Barbers Badger Shaving Brush.  Handmade exclusively for Bolt Barbers by Frank Pollaro.  Each brush is unique, reflecting the special characteristics of the hand crafted exotic wooden body, hand turned, one at a time.

Frank refined and developed the ergonomic shape of these brushes over a 20-year period.  Frank was inspired  for the shape by his prized woodworking tools, especially his veneer woodworking saw.  The shaving brush is a natural extension of his passion to always hold a beautiful tool.

Each Bolt Badger Shaving brush starts with a genuine badger hair tuft that is custom made to Frank’s exact specifications for brush quality, brush density, bristle stiffness, length and diameter.  Frank personally hand selects the solid exotic Cocobola and Macassar Ebony woods for  the brush body to ensure superior color and interesting grain. The brush body is then individually turned on Frank’s lathe. No duplicators or templates are used.

Each brush is finished with water resistant varnish and then sanded and hand polished to perfection. The polished varnish allows the deep natural colors of the wood to radiate. This is the same finish used on the finest Pollaro dining tables.

Once the badger brush is secured into the finished body, each brush is then carefully tuned, to ensure the final shaping of the brush achieves perfection.

The history of bay rum is as caveman as it gets.  Sailors in the 16th century discovered that the West Indies bay leaf made a great perfume to freshen up and mask the stink they acquired while being stuck on a ship for months. To apply the scent to themselves, the sailors would rub the dry leaves on their body, thus leaving the fragrant oil on their skin. While sailors were rubbing leaves on themselves, farmers were cultivating boat loads of sugar to be shipped back to Europe. Tired of having to rub bay leaves on himself like a weirdo, some sailor got the idea that rum would make a great liquid to steep the bay leaves in to extract their essential oils and make an easy-to-apply cologne. And with that, bay rum was born. Islanders took this basic recipe and began adding their own olfactory flourishes by mixing in cloves, citrus rind, and cinnamon.
